There has been much debate about the comparative sharpness of Canon's zoom lenses compared to that of their prime lenses or set focal length lenses. It is true that there is quite a difference when you are comparing low to mid range prime lenses to Canon's low to mid range zooms. You will find that the primes within this price point will be notably sharper than the zoom lens equivalent...however you do sacrifice the versatility of having a zoom lens. The high end lenses, Canon's L-series lenses or luxury series are just about equal and you will need to be extremely fastidious to actually notice a difference in most cases. In-fact in many cases I would be willing to honestly say that there is absolutely no noticeable difference in sharpness from some Canon L-series zooms to there prime competitors. The glass has just gotten that good.
