Lens Review

You will find that with your typical Digital SLR camera like a 20D, 30D or 350D model that the Canon Wide Angle Lenses are really not that wide. This is mainly due to the small sensor size, which increases the actual focal length of all your lenses. So Even if you decide to purchase a nice Canon L-Series Zoom Lens like the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L USM lens you will find it becomes more of a 25-56mm lens. If you are looking to use something in really tight spaces a lens like this may not do it. It is for this very reason that Canon developed the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens which is simply a 16-35mm lens when you have a 1.6 crop factor. They created the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens in an EF-S mount which will work for your small sensor cameras, but will not work on your full-frame digital SLRs like the Canon 5D and the Canon 1Ds Mark II.

Letís start with the basics. The EF-S stands for ďShort Back Focus.Ē This is only compatible (as I said above) with APS-C EOS SLRs (digital). The models currently included in this bunch are the Canon 300D (Digital Rebel), Canon 350D, Canon 20D and the Canon 30D. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens totes a protruding lens mount which requires a special mirror design (found on the models listed). This special mirror design will help to avoid a collision of your mirror with the mount of your Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens. The idea in developing such a system is to create a smaller space between the lens and the sensor thereby increasing the quality of your lens. This is not proven heretofore, but you will find this lens to be a great lens in the end anyway.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens comes standard with the powerful ring type USM (Ultrasonic Motor) drive which enables you to have lightning fast focusing, with a silent motor so you donít scare away the wildlife. It also helps to be able to focus quickly and accurately when you donít think conditions will permit.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens is also equipped with full-time manual focusing, which allows you to focus manually even when the autofocus mode is turned on. You simply set the camera to ONE SHOT AF mode and then press the shutter button down halfway. While you have the shutter button down halfway you may turn the focus ring to focus manually. This will also help you to avoid stripping your focus rings by focusing manually when you are in automatic mode.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens allows you a minimum focus distance of 9.5 inches, which will allow you to fill the frame with subjects as small as 3.6 x 5.4 inches.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens is really quite small and will enable you to add it to your lens collection without noticing a big change in weight to your bag. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens is a great lightweight wide angle lens.

Now lets get down to the image quality of the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens is quite an amazing lens, especially for the price you pay for it. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens is a bit soft at 10mm, but that is pretty much expected when it comes to wide angle lenses in general. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens performed well though and I found the overall sharpness of the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens to be superb. This lens is without a doubt a comparable lens optically to a Canon L-Series Zoom Lens.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens seems to control lens flare fairly well, which I even found to be a problem with my Canon 17-40mm f/4L USM lens, and so I was quite impressed in this regard.

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens is built with 3 aspherical lens elements and a super-UD element, which should insure great image quality. The aperture is made up of 6 aperture blades. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens construction is actually composed of 13 total elements, which includes those listed above.

The overall build quality of the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens is very nice, in-fact it is built surprisingly well. It seems like itís cousins are built much more poorly and so I am very impressed with the sturdiness I feel with the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens.

One thing that needs to be considered when pondering the purchase of the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens is practical application. The Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens is a super wide angle lens even for the Digital SLR bodies containing the smaller sensors and you need to be aware of the changes such a lens will have on your photographs. If you are looking for a wide-angle portrait lens the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens may or may not be the lens for you. It will wildly skew your picture, and it is important that you are aware of that before purchasing the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens. If you are in tight quarters or you want to take some interesting architectural pictures, then by all means pick up the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens.
